Long range weather forecasts suggest the chilly weather of early January is set to return towards the end of the month, with night frosts and some snowfall.

Temperatures are currently higher than usual, reaching around 10° in some regions thanks to the southwesterly wind. From Saturday, however, Weeronline says the wind will turn easterly, allowing colder air to return.

Over the weekend, daytime temperatures will be close to average at about 6° to 7°, but later next week it is likely to turn colder again. Daytime temperatures may hover just above zero, while frost will be more widespread at night. There may also be light snowfall in parts of the country.

The outlook for the very end of January remains uncertain, Weeronline said, although most weather models see the easterly wind continuing into early February. The KNMI paints a similar picture.
