Dutch airlines ground Middle East flights as tensions mount

Transavia has cancelled flights to Dubai for the coming days, following a similar decision by parent company KLM, amid rising tensions in the Middle East that have grounded many western airlines.
Last week, the EU’s aviation regulator said airlines should stay out of Iran’s airspace following Tehran’s deadly crackdown on protests and US threats of intervention.
“The presence and possible use of a wide range of weapons and air-defence systems, combined with unpredictable state responses … creates a high risk to civil flights operating at all altitudes and flight levels,” the EASA said in an update.
Transavia said flights to Dubai scheduled for Saturday, Sunday and Monday have been scrapped. KLM announced on Friday that it would suspend services for several days to Israel, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai.
The Dutch travel industry association ANVR told broadcaster NOS it estimates that several thousand travellers have been stranded in the region as a result of the cancellations. Passengers due to travel this weekend are being advised to contact their travel provider to discuss alternative arrangements.
Claims company EU Claim said around four flight rotations have been cancelled, affecting roughly 2,000 passengers. Because the cancellations are linked to instability in the region, passengers are not entitled to compensation.
Transavia said passengers can rebook on another flight or arrange an alternative themselves, with the airline covering reasonable additional costs.
Tour operators Corendon and TUI said customers whose trips have been cancelled can rebook or receive a full refund, while stranded travellers will be transferred to alternative flights where possible.
