The number of electric car charging points has tripled in the last five years as electric and hybrid vehicles have become more popular in the Netherlands.

In 2025 there were almost 210,000 plug points across the country, compared to 181,000 the previous year and 63,000 in 2020, figures from the government’s enterprise agency RVO found.

The trend has been driven a surge in the number of electric vehicles on the road, from 270,000 in 2020 to 1.2 million last year.

Most tax incentives for EVs, such as subsidies to buy new and second-hand cars and a discount on road tax, have been scrapped in the last two years.

Amsterdam had the largest number of charging points, with 16,000 last year, followed by Rotterdam with 11,000. However, not all municipalities followed the trend; Hilversum was one of 38 councils that had fewer plug points, removing 216 last year.
