The armed forces security service MIVD has launched several investigations into personnel who may have links with far-right groups in recent years, news website NU.nl reported on Monday.

The counter-terrorism unit NCTV warned in its most recent report that far-right extremism within the armed forces is a persistent problem, and the MIVD has confirmed the probes, NU.nl said.

A spokesman could not say how many people had been investigated or how many were still being monitored but did stress all signals of extremism are taken seriously and investigated.

The MIVD began monitoring far-right extremism within the armed forces in 2020, following revelations in Germany about an extremist network within an elite army unit.

Far-right extremism has also been identified as a problem within the police. The NRC reported in 2023 that serving police officers had filed dozens of complaints about racist or discriminatory behaviour by colleagues over a six-month period.
