Ajax and PSV dumped out of Champions League with home defeats

Ajax and PSV Eindhoven have been eliminated from the Champions League as they both slumped to home defeats on a miserable night for Dutch football.
PSV took on Bayern Munich in Eindhoven knowing the German giants had already qualified for the last 16 stage, allowing them to rest key players such as England striker Harry Kane and Serge Gnabry.
The home side had the best chances of a lively first half, but were unable to make the breakthrough they needed. Ismael Saibari cut in from the left-hand side but his tame shot was palmed away by Jonas Ubrig, while the goalkeeper pulled off an outstanding reflex save to deny Ivan Perisic’s header just before half-time.
Instead Bayern went ahead when Jamal Musiala collected a short pass and found the net from a tight angle seven minutes into the second half.
PSV were briefly back in contention when Saibari played a one-two with Guus Til before unleashing a diagonal shot from the edge of the area that gave Ubrig no chance.
But six minutes later Luis Diaz took down a long goal-kick by Urbig in the penalty area and squared the ball for the substitute Kane, who timed his run perfectly to stroke the ball past Kovar.
Ajax’s slender hopes of progress depended on seven other results going their way, even if they managed to beat Greek champions Olympiakos in Amsterdam.
Davy Klaassen had an early chance to give Ajax the lead, but the man known as “Mister 1-0” looked more like Mister Sitter as he kicked the ball against his own leg when he was in a good position to score.
Oskar Gloukh had the best chance of the first half when he blazed over from close range after 25 minutes. Shortly afterwards Kasper Dolberg put the ball in the net, but the home fans’ cheers were short-lived when replays showed he was half a foot offside.
The dream was definitively snuffed out in the 52nd minute when Gelson Martins beat Viteslav Jaros from close range.
Dolberg levelled from the penalty spot with 20 minutes left, but Ajax were effectively condemned by results elsewhere and Santiago Hezze delivered the coup de grâce when he headed in Olympiakos’ winner from a corner.
