This year some 31,000 motorists were sent on an alcohol and drugs awareness course or on had to undergo a psychiatric assessment because they were caught driving under the influence, driving test organisation CBR has said.

The total marks a 26% rise on 2024, the CBR said.

The increase is partly due to a 13% increase in the number of people caught driving under the influence by police. In addition, since April 1, drivers who have been caught under the influence of drugs are also automatically reported to the CBR as well.

The  EMA course is obligatory, and failure to attend will result in a withdrawal of the driver’s licence.

Most of the drivers who were caught were sent on a course, while some 7,000 had to be assessed by a psychiatrist because they were suspected of being addicted. In 2024, 4,932 drivers were evaluated by experts.

The course teaches drivers about the effects of alcohol and drugs when driving, and varies in length depending on the severity of the behaviour. The cost of the course, between €818 and €1,316, must be paid by the drivers themselves.

The increase in the number of people driving under the influence is worrying, CBR director Jan Jurgen said.

“Despite the BOB campaign and police checks, people still think it’s ok to drive after using alcohol and drugs. That is bad news,” he said.

“No alcohol or drugs is a rule for every day when driving, but with Christmas just around the corner, I call on everyone not to drive under the influence. There are lots of alternatives. Use your head!” he said.
