There was disappointment for all three Dutch clubs taking part in the Europa League competition on Thursday night, with no wins and the likelihood of progressing to the next stage of the competition increasingly out of sight.

Feyenoord threw away a 3-1 lead away to Romania’s FCSB. The Rotterdam side, coached by Robin van Persie, conceded a late equaliser and then lost 4-3 deep into stoppage time.

The defeat leaves Feyenoord on three points making progression to the next round of Europe’s second club tournament all but out of reach.

Go Ahead Eagles were unable to produce an upset against Olympique Lyonnais, but the Deventer club can take encouragement from their performance in France.

The French side, fifth in the French league and currently leading the Europa League table, were the stronger team and won the match 2-1.

Neveretheless, Go Ahead Eagles are 28th on six points and still have a realistic chance of reaching the play-off round if they can book an away win against OGC Nice on 22 January and at home to SC Braga on 29 January.

FC Utrecht also failed to record a win in their sixth Europa League match, losing 2-1 at home to Nottingham Forest. The defeat leaves Utrecht on one point and their chances of reaching the next round are negligible.

AZ win in Kosovo

AZ, however, took a valuable step forward in the Conference League with a convincing 3-0 away win against FK Drita. The Alkmaar side, who were 20th after four of six rounds, now have nine points following the victory in Kosovo.

In the Champions League, Ajax are third from bottom after their first win, while PSV are in place for a role in the playoffs with with a visit to Newcastle and a home match against Bayern Munich to come in January.
