Police made several arrests in the Floradorp district in Amsterdam-Noord on Sunday evening after being called out again to deal with protests about the ban on the estate’s traditional Christmas tree bonfire.

The unrest started on Saturday night when riot police were called in after multiple fires were set in the neighbourhood and groups of youngsters threw fireworks at the police.

The youngsters have also set fire to waste containers, as well as destroying security cameras, police vans and a mobile toilet.

The annual bonfire was banned earlier this year by mayor Femke Halsema on the advice of the fire service because it was deemed to dangerous for locals and harmful to the environment.

A total of six people have been arrested so far.
