Jesse Klaver set to become new GroenLinks-PvdA leader

The new batch of 20 MPs for the GroenLinks-PvdA alliance will decide on Monday morning who will be their next leader, following the resignation of Frans Timmermans after the party’s election losses.
Jesse Klaver is almost certain to get the job, following Sunday’s announcement by new MP Marjolein Moorman that she was not interested in the position and supported Klaver.
Moorman said in her own podcast on Sunday that Klaver, 39, is “by far the best candidate” for the role. Moorman, currently a member of Amsterdam council’s executive, has been widely tipped as a future party leader.
As GroenLinks leader, Klaver was involved in efforts to form a coalition with the VVD, CDA and D66 in 2017, but eventually pulled his party out.
Klaver will also take a leading role in the formation of the next cabinet. D66 leader Rob Jetten, who is set to become the country’s youngest prime minister, has made no secret of his preference for a coalition with the VVD, GroenLinks-PvdA and the Christian Democrats.
The combination could count on 86 MPs in the 150-seat lower house of parliament, or 87 if D66 gains a seat when the overseas votes are counted.
But VVD leader Dilan Yesilgöz and several ministers have said they do not want to be part of a coalition with the left-wing green party.
A right-wing coalition involving the far-right JA21 could only count on 75 or 76 seats.
Party officials have pointed out that the parliamentary party leader is not necessarily the national party leader. GroenLinks and PvdA are expected to formalise their merger next year.
