PSV Eindhoven propelled themselves back into Champions League contention with a stunning 6-2 win over Napoli as Ismael Saibari and Dennis Man tore the Italian champions apart.

Both sides made a lively start in the Phillips Stadium, with Saibari putting the ball in the net first in the 19th minute, only to be denied by an offside flag.

Instead it was the visitors who took the lead when Leonardo Spinazzola swung in a cross that Scott McTominay met with a perfectly timed header at the near post.

Two minutes later PSV got back into contention when Alessandro Buongiorno headed past his own goalkeeper under pressure from stand-in striker Guus Til.

And four minutes later the match was turned on its head when a breakaway move that began with a tackle by Jerdy Schouten in his own penalty area ended with Ismail Saibari breaking clear to fire the ball past Sergej Milinkovich-Savic.

Man extended the lead 10 minutes after the break when he steered in a cross by Mauro Jr., and Ivan Perisic almost made it four when his shot from the edge of the penalty area was blocked by the defence.

Pepi returns

Napoli’s faint hopes of staging a comeback were ended when Lorenzo Lucca was sent off 15 minutes from the end when the referee interpreted his head-tapping gesture after he fell to the ground in the penalty area as a personal insult.

Instead PSV turned on a late show for the fans as Man scored his second with a curling shot, Ricardo Pepi tapped in a fifth less than a minute after coming on as a substitute and another replacement, Couhaib Driouech, deceived Sergej Milinkovich-Savic with a near-post thunderbolt.

McTominay bagged his second for the visitors in between, but it was scant consolation.

Schouten said his team-mates grew in confidence after overcoming the early setback. “It was tough for us for the first 15 minutes, but as soon as we got into our stride we dominated the game. We could have scored eight. It was a fantastic night.”

After taking four points from their opening three matches, PSV travel to Greece for their next match against Olympiacos on November 4.
