One dead and dozens homeless after major fire in Amsterdam

One person has been killed and dozens made homeless in a massive fire that broke out in an apartment building in Amsterdam Nieuw-West on Monday evening.
The blaze started around 7pm on the third floor of the complex and led to the evacuation of around 100 residents. Two people suffered from smoke inhalation but did not need hospital treatment. Three firefighters were also checked by medical staff, one of whom was taken to hospital.
The victim was found inside one of the flats, police said, and their identity has not yet been released.
All the apartments evacuated on Monday evening have been declared temporarily uninhabitable, local safety board officials said. Parts of the building suffered serious smoke, soot and water damage, and many windows were broken as fire fighters fought to get the blaze under control.
Residents who cannot stay with family or friends have been offered temporary accommodation in hotels. The building has now been sealed off and placed under guard.
Police are still investigating the cause of the fire.
