More arrests as refugee centre protests continue across NL

Six people were arrested at another demonstration against refugee centres in the Netherlands on Tuesday night, this time in Amersfoort.
Three people were detained for throwing fireworks and two for insulting police officers, local broadcaster RTV Utrecht reported.
In total, some 250 demonstrators took part in the protest outside city hall. Of them, 150 were opposing the planned refugee centre and 100 were demonstrating against the far right and in support of asylum seekers, RTV Utrecht said.
Last week Amersfoort council dropped plans to house some 750 refugees in several centres following protests but pledged to come up with a new proposal.
Nationwide protests
Protests against asylum centres and shelters have escalated in recent weeks, leading to dozens of arrests nationwide.
The demonstrations come as councils face mounting pressure from the government to create more housing for asylum seekers amid a continuing shortage of accommodation.
Local authorities warned last week that councils are being left to cope “on their own” and urged the caretaker government to act swiftly.
