Man jailed for drunken King’s Day rape in Amsterdam

An Italian national has been sentenced to 18 months in prison, six of them suspended, for raping an Irish woman during this year’s King’s Day celebrations in Amsterdam. The 28-year-old, identified as Sirio S, must also pay compensation to the victim.

The Amsterdam court ruled that S raped the 35-year-old woman while she was under the influence of alcohol and medication and unable to resist. The judges based their verdict largely on a compilation of videos made by police from footage that circulated on social media.

The attack took place in broad daylight between parked cars on the busy Keizersgracht and ended when passersby pulled him off the woman.

His victim told the court during the earlier hearing she has no memory of what happened which, the court said, was probably due to the combination of alcohol and medication. S also claimed he remembered little, saying through his lawyer that he had been drunk at the time.

The man, who came to the Netherlands to find work but ended up living on the streets, previously told the court he felt ashamed and guilty but did not attend Thursday’s hearing.

The court said it did not regard the fact S was drunk as a mitigating factor, stating that he should have realised the woman was unable to consent and that his actions, carried out in public, would likely lead to the videos being shared online.

Prosecutors had demanded a three-year sentence. The court imposed a lower term, taking into account S’s expressions of remorse and the fact there are indications he has psychological problems.
