FC Emmen lost a rare Drenthe derby to the amateurs of Hoogeveen in one of the biggest shocks of the first round of the Dutch cup.

The Keuken Kampioen side went behind in the first half to a penalty scored by Sander Egbers and were unable to respond as Hoogeveen, standing 13th in the third division, parked the bus in front of goal.

Emmen coach Menno van Dam made no secret of his frustration at his own team after the match. “We were stupid enough to be caught by one long ball. And only seven of our 27 shots were on target, and they were weak shots,” he told ESPN.

Elsewhere cup specialists Katwijk dumped out Vitesse Arnhem, the winners from 2017, in a penalty shoot-out, but only after goalkeeper Stan van Bladeren came within a whisker of making headlines for the wrong reasons.

Van Bladeren leapt into the crowd to celebrate after saving from Yuval Ranon, but the score was still 3-3 and Joey Ravensbergen subsequently missed his chance to win the tie for Katwijk.

Van Bladeren went back in goal and made amends by stopping the next kick by Vitesse’s Ashraf Moustafa, and this time Levi Bouwense made no mistake to send the second division side through.

De Graafschap dumped

GVVV, another second division team from Veenendaal, had no need for penalties as they went 2-0 up against De Graafschap in the first six minutes, eventually eliminating the professional side 4-2.

ADO Den Haag, the leaders of the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, lost in a shoot-out to Den Bosch, while low-ranked Top Oss won 2-0 away to Eerste Divisie leaders HHC.

All the Eredivisie sides in action came through their ties unscathed, although Fortuna Sittard only managed a 1-0 win at third division side Gemert.

PEC Zwolle eased past Helmond Sport with a 4-1 win while bottom club Heerenveen were similarly untroubled by VVV, winning 3-0. In Tuesday’s other ties Roda JC Kerkrade won 5-1 at VV Capelle and Almere City beat Sparta Nijkerk 2-0.
