Election watch: political donations and the vegan streaker

The Netherlands will elect 150 members of the lower house of parliament in five days time. Here’s a compilation of the latest election news.
Big donations to political parties down sharply
Political parties received far fewer large donations this year than in the previous election year, according to an ANP analysis of government data on gifts of more than €10,000.
The total amount donated fell from almost €5.5 million in 2023 to €3 million in 2025. The VVD and SP saw the biggest drops, with the VVD taking in €1 million less and the SP €850,000 less than two years ago.
D66’s income rose to €765,000, almost 50% more than in 2023. The GroenLinks-PvdA alliance received €940,000 in big donations, most of which were made to the GroenLinks arm of the party.
Hague office starts counting expat votes early
With the general election less than a week away, vote counting has already begun in Scheveningen, where staff are processing around 90,000 ballots from Dutch voters abroad.
This year a record number of Dutch expats had signed up to vote in the election. All foreign votes must be counted by the Tuesday after election day and that means votes which arrive too late are not included.
‘Vegan streaker’ disrupts Jinek live show
Animal rights activist Peter Janssen, known as the “vegan streaker”, interrupted Eva Jinek’s live talk show on Thursday evening by appearing half-naked behind the presenter during a discussion about the election.
Janssen shouted that “it’s always about people, but we should also talk about animals” before being escorted out by security. Broadcaster AVROTROS said its security measures will be reviewed.
Janssen, who booked to attend the show under a false name, has staged similar protests in the past, including during a show by Paul de Leeuw.
