Some 13.4 million people can vote in the Dutch general election in four days time. Here’s a round-up of the latest campaign news.

Seven parties sign rainbow agreement

Seven political parties have signed a new “Rainbow Agreement” with campaign group COC, pledging to strengthen the rights, safety and emancipation of LGBTI people.

Frans Timmermans (GroenLinks-PvdA), Henri Bontenbal (CDA), Rob Jetten (D66), Dilan Yeşilgöz (VVD), Bastiaan Meijer (SP), Ines Kostić (PvdD) and Marieke Koekkoek (Volt) have committed to several measures, including reintroducing the transgender law withdrawn by the previous government.

The bill would make it easier for transgender people to change the gender on their passport. Although a majority in parliament supported a motion to scrap the proposal last year, both the VVD and CDA now say they have a “positive attitude” towards a new version.

BBB wants to change the constitution

BBB leader Caroline van der Plas says parts of the Dutch constitution should be amended because her party’s views increasingly clash with the rule of law. She made the comments in an interview with regional broadcaster RTV Oost.

The BBB wants to stop the establishment of new Islamic schools, which would conflict with Article 23 of the constitution guaranteeing the freedom to found schools based on religious or ideological convictions.

“What we think – and this isn’t about Islam itself – is that Islamic schools teach things that don’t align with our Western norms and values. It’s also bad for integration: children are in a kind of bubble at such schools,” Van der Plas said. “If that means we need to change the constitution, then so be it.”
