Dock workers end their strike at Rotterdam port, pay deal agreed

The strike by some dock workers at the port of Rotterdam is officially over after they voted overwhelmingly in favour of a new pay deal.
The strike centred on two companies providing lashing services to freight operators. Lashing, which involves securing containers to a ship’s deck, can only be carried out by trained dock workers.
Staff at ILS and Matrans downed tools last Wednesday after pay talks broke down but were ordered back to work by a court on Friday.
The new agreement includes a wage increase of between 17% and 20% over the next three years, as well as improvements to working conditions.
The strike had a major impact on operations at the port, as container ships were unable to load or unload. By Monday, some 25 cargo vessels were waiting off the coast of Rotterdam for the strike to end.
