Despite recycling, Dutch councils are collecting more waste

Dutch local councils collected nearly 8.2 billion kilos of household waste in 2024, equivalent to around 456 kilograms per person, according to new figures from national statistics agency CBS.
That is four kilos per person more than in 2023, the CBS said.
The amount of non-recyclable household waste collected across the country rose to 179 kilos per person, one kilogram more than in 2023.
The Wadden islands of Schiermonnikoog, Texel and Vlieland recorded the highest amounts, mainly because of the large number of tourists. Big cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague also produced more non-recyclable waste because they don’t offer as many options for recycling as some places.
Some 60% of local authorities separate waste – plastic in particular – after it has been collected using automated system.
The amount of paper and cardboard collected per person fell by just under a kilo to 40.6 kilos per person. This, the CBS said, was due to the increasing popularity of automation and online admin.
