Americans in the Netherlands prepare for No Kings rally

On Saturday, Americans will gather on Museumplein in Amsterdam as part of the No Kings protest, a worldwide demonstration opposing the policies of US president Donald Trump.
Organisers are following up on a highly successful march in June, which coincided with Trump’s birthday. Hundreds of thousands turned out across the US to oppose the military parade Trump ordered for his 79th birthday celebration.
A group of some 300 also turned out in the Netherlands, including Hayley Hughes who is organsing Saturday’s event.
“It’s too important not to,” the 39-year-old told Dutch News. The PhD student hopes the turnout in Amsterdam will show support for the protesters at home, who she says are facing real risks.
“The president thinks his rule is absolute. But in America, we don’t have kings and we won’t back down against chaos, corruption, and cruelty,” the No King’s oranisation says on its website.
The group says its opposed to the targeting of immigrants, Trump’s use of the military in cities and the gutting of education.
The event is set to be held in front of the US consulate on Museumplein and is one of around two dozen planned around Europe.
Anyone, American or otherwise, is welcome to attend. “I’ll probably be the oldest person there,” 65-year-old Chris Barrand joked to Dutch News. She’s lived in Amsterdam for more than 20 years and says she wasn’t too involved in politics until recently.
The organisers are hoping for a bigger crowd this time. “Last time we even had a couple who stopped by during a layover at Schiphol,” says Hughes.
The event will take place outside the US consulate at Museumplein 19 in Amsterdam from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday, October 18, 2025.
