Amazon marks five years in NL with €1.4 billion investment

Amazon says it plans to invest €1.4 billion over the next three years to expand its operations in the Netherlands, in a move aimed at attracting more small businesses to sell through its platform.
Country manager for the Netherlands and Belgium, Eva Faict, told the Financieele Dagblad most of the money will go towards helping companies who sell through Amazon.nl.
Around 4,500 Dutch SMEs currently use the platform, accounting for 60% of its total sales. “We want this investment to help build trust among entrepreneurs and consumers,” Faict said.
Some capital will also be used to expand Amazon’s logistics network, including more pick-up points and same-day delivery options. Amazon employs about 1,000 people in the Netherlands, with offices in Amsterdam and The Hague, a sorting centre in Rozenburg near Schiphol, and a warehouse in Almelo.
The company also plans to expand its cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services, which provides data services to European and Dutch clients.
Amazon still lags far behind Bol, owned by Ahold Delhaize, which recorded €3.1 billion in sales in the Netherlands last year, compared with Amazon’s estimated €1 billion. According to data from German research firm ECDB, the Netherlands and Belgium remain the only Western European countries where Amazon is not the market leader.
Around three-quarters of Dutch small firms that sell via Amazon export their products to other European countries such as Germany, Belgium and France. “We offer them access to a huge market,” Faict said.
In 2024, Amazon reported a global net profit of $59 billion on revenue of $638 billion.
