Memphis breaks record as underwhelming Oranje win in Lithuania

Memphis Depay became the Netherlands’ all-time leading male goalscorer as Oranje were unable to impose themselves against unfancied Lithuania.
Depay, 31, took just 10 minutes to make the record his own when he turned a cross from Cody Gakpo in from close range for his 51st goal in 104 international matches.
Despite creating few chances, the Dutch looked set for a comfortable victory when Quinten Timber ran onto Donyell Malen’s pass to bag his first in an orange shirt after 33 minutes.
But just three minutes later Lithuania pounced on some slack defending as Justas Lasickas ran unchallenged into the penalty area before finding Gvidas Gineitis, who clipped a first-time shot into the bottom corner.
And three minutes before half-time the hosts, ranked 143rd in the world by FIFA, were level when Edvinas Girdvainis headed in unmarked from a free-kick by Gineitis.
Both sides had good chances early in the second half before Depay saved Ronald Koeman’s pride in the 63rd minute when he headed a cross by Denzel Dumfries into the top corner.
Gakpo hit the bar before Malen tapped in to an empty net, only to have the goal disallowed for a foul earlier in the move, as Oranje pressed forward in an effort to make the game safe.
But with the midfield struggling to retain possession, head coach Koeman brought on Matthijs de Ligt as a fifth defender late on to secure the points.
The result mean the Netherlands lead Group G with 10 points from four matches, three ahead of Poland and Finland.
The next two matches are away to Malta on October 9, followed by a home game against Finland on October 12.
