A fatal house fire in Roermond on Tuesday which left two people dead was started deliberately, police have confirmed.

A 51-year-old woman, named by Dutch media as Peggy, died of her injuries in hospital and her 16-year-old son Kyano died in the fire. Another boy, aged 14, has also been hospitalised with serious injuries.

Police said at the time they suspected arson after finding jerrycans at the scene.

Neighbours told the Telegraaf the family was known to have problems and was on a council waiting list for help.

Locals in Roermond held a silent march in the victims’ honour on Wednesday evening.
