Dutch inflation drop slightly to 2.8% in August, food prices up

The Dutch annual rate of inflation stood at 2.8% in August, slightly down from 2.9% in July, according to an early estimate by national statistics office CBS.
On a month-to-month basis, consumer prices rose by 0.2%. The CBS said these short-term movements are often influenced by seasonal effects such as higher airline ticket prices during the holiday period.
The figures show food prices continue to rise, with the food, drinks and tobacco category increasing 3.7% year-on-year, albeit down from 4.1% in July.
The cost of services increased by 3.8%, compared with 4% a month earlier. Energy including motor fuels was 1.6% more expensive.
Calculated according to European methods, the Dutch rate of inflation was 2.4% in August, down slightly on July’s 2.5%. The European method does not take rental housing costs into account.
Final consumer price index figures for August will be published on 9 September.
