Coal-fired power drives rise in Dutch electricity production

Dutch power stations produced 64 billion kWh of electricity in the first half of 2025, 7% more than a year earlier, as coal use jumped, national statistics agency CBS said on Friday.

Coal-fired generation surged by 72% compared with the same period in 2024. Gas plants also increased output, together compensating for weaker renewable production.

Lower coal and gas prices in the first quarter encouraged the extra use of fossil fuels, the CBS said. Coal plants generated 2 billion kWh power more than a year earlier, while gas plants added the same amount.

Renewable production slipped by 1 billion kWh in the first half of the year because of lower wind speeds on land and at sea. Solar power partly filled the gap, setting a record 10 billion kWh in the second quarter.

Renewables accounted for 48% of electricity output in the first six months, slightly less than the 50% share a year ago.
