Another new opinion poll has pointed to the decline in support for the right-wing Liberal VVD, while again showing a surge in backing for the Christian Democrats.

The Ipsos I&O poll says the far-right PVV is set to be the largest party, with around 30 seats in the 150-seat parliament – or 20% of the vote.

In second place is the CDA, led by Henri Bontenbal, which voters describe as a “decent, trustworthy, stable centre party with a trustworthy leader.”

The poll puts the CDA in second place with 25 seats, the first time since 2006 that the party has ranked in the top two. Support for the GroenLinks-PvdA alliance is down slightly at 23 seats.

The Ipsos I&O poll suggests the VVD may win just 15 seats, down 10 on its current total. The party’s fortunes have plummeted following a number of gaffes by leader Dilan Yesilgöz, in particular her social media attack on popular singer Douwe Bob.

The Netherlands will vote for a new government on October 29 and campaigning has not yet officially started.

“Much is still unclear,” Tom Louwerse, who compiles the Peilingwijzer poll of polls, told broadcaster NOS. “Everything can shift in the campaign. And many people who say they will vote for a party are not really sure.”

The latest edition of the poll of polls, which combines the results of the Ipsos and EenVandaag rankings, still has the GroenLinks-PvdA alliance slightly ahead of the CDA.

The fifth party in the current poll of poll ranking is D66 on 10 to 12 seats, followed by the far-right group JA21 and the Socialists.
