Veldhoven-based chip machinery producer ASML is investing €1.3 billion in French AI company Mistral, news agency Reuters said on Sunday.

That would make ASML the company’s biggest shareholder and could entitle it to a seat on the board, Reuters said, quoting anonymous sources.

The capital injection would also make Mistral the most valuable European AI company, with a value of some €10 billion. The company was founded in 2023 by former DeepMind and Meta researchers.

ASML already uses artificial intelligence to make its chip machines more efficient but until now has largely developed the technology in house, the Financieele Dagblad said.

The Mistral move, the FD said, would further strengthen the Dutch firm’s position as a European leader.
