Amsterdam puts €6 million into tackling violence against women

Amsterdam is investing an extra €6 million to improve the safety of women, with measures ranging from prevention to support services, mayor Femke Halsema said on Tuesday.
Halsema announced the plans following a number of serious incidents in the region, including the murder of Lisa who was cycling home at night and a sexual assault in Amsterdam.
“What has happened in recent weeks demands reflection and action: what more can we do to stop violence against women and give victims the support they deserve?” she said in her briefing to city councillors.
At the same time, police in the city are setting up a new online platform which will combine expertise from across the force and connect with justice ministry officials and the social workers.
The platform, officials say, will make reporting easier, train officers to spot signs of sexual and domestic violence, and focus on early warnings to prevent abuse and femicide.
The city’s extra funding will also support prevention projects such as an online app or platform, buddy schemes in nightlife areas and awareness campaigns. Some of the funding will also go towards making streets safer at night.
Halsema said the many ideas submitted by Amsterdammers in recent weeks showed “the broad social indignation and involvement” around the issue.
“As council and security team, we stand with all those who oppose violence and intimidation,” she said. “We want to stop the violence, prevent it from happening again and give victims the support they need.”
The city, police and prosecution service will work out the details of the measures in the weeks ahead.
