Ajax set sights on Dolberg return after Brobbey joins Sunderland

Ajax are expected to complete the signing of Kasper Dolberg on Tuesday after Brian Brobbey and Bertrand Traoré left for Sunderland for a joint fee of €22.5 million.

Anderlecht have valued Dolberg at €10 million and the clubs are understood to have agreed personal terms, but Ajax’s technical director Alex Kroes has warned that funds are tight.

The 27-year-old Danish international striker spent four years in Amsterdam between 2015 and 2019, scoring 33 goals in 78 appearances before leaving for Nice.

Last week he turned down a proposed move to Scottish champions Celtic in the hope that he could arrange a move to Ajax before the transfer window closes on Tuesday evening.

The last-minute sale of Traoré for €2.5 million, following the earlier €20 million deal for Brobbey, could give Ajax the cash injection they need, as Kroes has capped spending on players at 40% of the club’s transfer income.

Brobbey, 23, who has been on Ajax’s books since the age of eight, admitted that it would be tough to leave the club. “I’ve had high points and low points, but I feel a new environment and a stronger league are the best thing for me right now,” he told Ajax’s website.

Boadu to PSV

He and Traoré will be joined in Sunderland by another Netherlands international, Lutsharel Geertruida, after the former Feyenoord defender joined the English club on loan from RB Leipzig.

Ajax have also signed midfielder James McConnell on loan from Liverpool for the rest of the season, while defender Ahmetcan Kaplan is being loaned to NEC Nijmegen.

PSV have signed former AZ Alkmaar striker Myron Boadu from Monaco on a one-year contract for a reported fee of €800,000. The club needed cover for new signing Alassane Pléa, who is out until at least December after suffering a knee injury in his second game.

Peter Bosz has been only partially successful in replenishing his forward line following the departures of Malik Tillman to Leverkusen, Johan Bakayoko to RB Leipzig and Noa Lang to Napoli, while Ricardo Pepi is still not match fit.

Wing-back Alass Salah-Eddine has joined the club on a season-long loan from AS Roma, while PSV turned down a €30 million bid from Brentford for midfielder Joey Veerman.

Timber stays at Feyenoord

Feyenoord have retained the services of Quinten Timber after fending off interest frorm Bayer Leverkusen and West Ham United, while South Korean international Hwang In-Beom is also staying in Rotterdam after an approach by Fulham was rejected.

The club have loaned Argentinian striker Julian Carranza, scorer of the goal that knocked AC Milan out of the Champions League last season, to English championship side Leicester City and winger Calvin Stengs to Serie A club Pisa.

The latter player saw his chances of first-team action diminished by the arrival of Sem Steijn earlier in the summer for a club record fee of €13 million.

Other moves announced on Dutch transfer deadline day include a loan deal taking Zico Buurmeester back to PEC Zwolle from AZ, while Go Ahead Eagles have signed 21-year-old defender Giovanni van Zwam from Vitesse Arnhem after the latter club lost its professional licence.

Most major leagues’ transfer windows closed on Monday night, but clubs in the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain can all sign players up until midnight on Tuesday.
