Eredivisie newcomers Telstar produced the shock of the season so far by winning 2-0 in Eindhoven to bring PSV’s perfect start to the season to a crashing halt.

Telstar, who last won a match in the top flight in 1978, looked hungrier from the start and went ahead when Tyrone Owusu cut in from the left and lashed a shot into the top corner from outside the penalty area.

PSV coach Peter Bosz made three changes at half-time, but goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr kept the champions at bay with a string of fine saves before Patrick Brouwer tapped in from a corner to seal the win for Telstar.

Bosz was full of praise for the tenacity of his opponents. “Let me start by saying that I think we deserved to lose,” he told NOS. “Telstar were much better than us and they were the only ones who had any right to the win.”

Feyenoord took over at the top of the table following their 4-0 win at city rivals Sparta, who played most of the second half with 10 men after Bruno Martins Indi was dismissed for hauling down Ayesa Ueda.

Australian defender Jordan Bos gave Feyenoord the lead when a corner was headed out to him on the edge of the penalty area and he dispatched a half-volley into the roof of the net.

Ueda scored twice, either side of Martins Indi’s dismissal, before Quinten Timber squeezed in a fourth just before the final whistle.

NEC toppled

NEC missed the chance to go three points clear at the top as they lost to a late goal at Fortuna Sittard. Mohamed Ihattaren, making his first start since joining the Limburg club, took just three minutes to find the net with a low shot and added a penalty in the 35th minute after Brayann Pereira was penalised for handball.

NEC equalised through Bryan Linssen in the first half and levelled again almost as soon as Ihattaren was withdrawn from the action in the 64th minute as Sami Ouiassa controlled a high cross perfectly before firing into the top corner. But as NEC pressed for a winner, Ihattaren’s replacement, Paul Gladon, finished off a breakaway move to claim the points for Fortuna.

Utrecht are the third team on nine points following a 2-0 win at PEC Zwolle. English-born summer signing Derry Murkin laid on the opening goal for Davy van den Berg and scored a second two minutes later at the end of the first half.

“Sloppy” Ajax

Ajax coach John Heitinga was frustrated after his team could only manage a 1-1 draw at Volendam. Veteran striker Henk Veerman gave the home side the lead with a swerving half-volley from outside the penalty area in the 16th minute.

It took until the 61st minute for Ajax to reply through Ko Itakura. “We didn’t win enough challenges, ” said Heitinga. “We were too sloppy. It felt like a defeat.”

Sven Mijnans scored an 89th-minute winner for AZ at NAC after the home side had striker Sydney van Hooijdonk sent off just before half-time for a heavy challenge. NAC’s misery was compounded when Charles-Andreas Brym missed a second-half penalty.

Go Ahead Eagles salvaged a point at Heerenveen with a 93rd-minute equaliser by Finn Stokkers, having taken an early lead when Melle Meulensteen volleyed in a corner after 55 seconds.

Goals from Nikolai Hopland and Jacob Trenskow either side of half-time turned the match around for Heerenveen, whose coach Robin Veldman was critical of goalkeeper Andries Noppert’s performance. “We will be talking to him seriously and saying we expect a higher standard,” Veldman said.

Excelsior overcame the early dismissal of Stan Henderikx to inflict Twente’s third defeat in their opening four matches, after Mike van Duinen burst into the penalty area and found the net from a tight angle in the 83rd minute.

Brynjolfur Willumsson took his tally to the season for five goals as Groningen beat Heracles 4-0 to leave their opponents bottom of the table with a goal difference of minus 13.
