PSV Eindhoven have claimed the Johan Cruyff Shield for a record 15th time after a late turnaround against cup winners Go Ahead Eagles in Eindhoven.

The visitors took the lead before half-time through Mathis Suray, but a late own goal by Gerrit Nauber brought PSV level. Sergiño Dest then secured the 2-1 victory with five minutes before full time.

PSV, who also won the trophy in 2021, 2022 and 2023, were missing several key players from last season, including Luuk de Jong, who is moving to FC Porto.

Several newcomers featured in Peter Bosz’s line-up, including goalkeeper Matej Kovár and debutants Yarek Gasiorowski and Alassane Pléa.

The Johan Cruyff Shield is the “super cup” competition between the league champions and winners of the KNVB cup, and marks an unofficial start to the coming season.

The Eredivisie kicks off on Friday when Go Ahead meet Fortuna Sittard.
