Moorman most prominent new face as GL-PvdA opts for experience

The left-wing opposition party GroenLinks-PvdA’s list of candidates for the general election features the same top five names that ran in 2023.
Party leader Frans Timmermans heads the list, followed by MPs Esmah Lalah, Jesse Klaver, Kati Piri and Lisa Westerveld.
The first new name is Marjolein Moorman in sixth place. The 51-year-old, currently alderman for education in Amsterdam, has been touted as a potential future successor to Timmermans.
Timmermans, 64, was confirmed as leader by delegates at a party conference in June, but the rest of the list still has to be endorsed by members.
Another new face is Sjoukje van Oosterhout, 32, a lawyer working with Friends of the Earth (Milieudefensie) on the climate cases against Shell.
Several sitting MPs have been demoted on the list, including Raoul White, down from 21st place in 2023 to 30th, Barbara Kathmann, who drops from 18th to 32nd, and Glimina Chakor, falling from 23rd to 35th. Opinion polls indicate GL-PvdA, which has 25 seats, is projected to win between 25 and 29 in October.
GroenLinks and PvdA (Labour) are running a combined list as separate parties, but have voted to merge next year into a new party, whose name still has to be decided.
VVD final list
The right-wing liberal VVD has published its final list after party members voted on the candidates.
Bente Becker, a sitting MP, has been pushed down from third place on the provisional list to sixth, behind defence minister Ruben Brekelmans and economic affairs minister Vincent Karremans. The list is headed by party leader Dilan Yesilgöz.
Thierry Aartsen, currently minister for infrastructure, has also been demoted one place to 14th, swapping places with defence spokesman Ulysse Elian. The VVD currently has 24 MPs, but is forecast to win between 20 and 24 in October.
