Gelderland seeks to shoot high flying wolf that jumps fences

A wolf thought to have killed around 60 sheep in Barneveld in recent months should be shot, the province of Gelderland has said. The animal repeatedly jumped over a wolf-resistant fence, which is supposed to keep livestock safe.

Footage released by the province shows the wolf leaping over the barrier on the night of 16 to 17 July. The camera was installed after a series of incidents and officials said the wolf jumped the fence, which met the current standards, almost 20 times.

Wolves shown to have attacked sheep behind such a fence more than twice in two weeks are considered by the Dutch provinces to be a “problem wolf.” Gelderland is now working on a permit that would allow the animal to be shot. The province said this is a complex legal process but expects the permit to be granted soon.

BIJ12, which monitors the Dutch wolf population, said it is the first time in the Netherlands that clear evidence has been recorded of a wolf jumping such a fence.

“In general, an electrified fence of 1.20 metres is a proven effective method to deter wolves,” a spokesman said. “But we always add that it does not give a 100% guarantee.”

Farmers can apply for subsidies to install protective fencing, which is intended to reduce wolf attacks.

However, figures published last week showed that the number of incidents is rising. BIJ12 registered 497 attacks on sheep and other livestock in the first half of this year, compared with 360 in the same period in 2023.

The video of the wolf was released after a freedom of information request.
