Dutch strawberry harvest explodes thanks to greenhouses: CBS

Many eastern Europeans work in the greenhouse sector

Strawberry growers produced a record 86 million kilos of the fruit last year, double the amount compared to 2010, figures from statistics agency CBS have shown.

Strawberries are increasingly grown in plastic tunnels or greenhouses, resulting in a harvests that are three times bigger than 2010.  The number of hectares used for strawberries has gone down by 15% in that time, the CBS said.

Apart from taking up less space, another advantage of tunnels and greenhouses is that plants are better protected against pests and mould, CBS researcher Vinodh Lalta told NU.nl.

“I noticed that supermarkets were selling Dutch strawberries as early as February. Thanks to the greenhouses, they can be sold almost all year round,” she said.

The figures for 2025 have not been collected yet, the CBS, said but are likely to show even less land will be used to grow strawberries.
