A 65-year-old Dutch man has died in an accident during a hang gliding competition in the French Alps.

The man fell 20 metres to the ground when his delta glider was blown off balance by a gust of wind as he was descending from Chabre mountain on Sunday. The 1300-metre peak is a popular location for gliders in Provence.

He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, a field in the municipality of Val Buëch-Méouge, local fire services told AFP.
