Boy, 17, rescued after swimming out to sea off Terschelling

A teenager has been rescued after becoming disoriented during a late-night swim off the island of Terschelling.
The 17-year-old boy was suffering from hypothermia and exhaustion when he was found swimming two kilometres off the southern shore of the island.
The lifeboat service KNRM found the boy after an hour-long search which began when people on shore raised the alarm. Two workers dived into the water and lifted him onto a stretcher to prevent his body temperature falling further.
He was taken back to the island’s harbour before being transferred to hospital in Leeuwarden, Omrop Fryslân reported. No information has been released about his condition.
Earlier this week a 27-year-old woman from Texel drowned and two other people had to be rescued after being caught in a rip tide off the coast of the island near De Koog.
