Rail union VVMC said on Friday it is prepared to resume talks with Dutch rail operator NS, after members rejected the company’s final offer for a new pay deal.

The union, the largest representing train staff, said it had suspended all planned industrial action following internal consultations. This means no further train strikes are expected for the time being.

Earlier this month, VVMC and FNV members voted against NS’s final offer, which included a 4% pay increase and 2.75% from March next year. The CNV union backed the deal.

The VVMC, which wants an 8% pay deal, discussed its rejection of the proposal with NS on Thursday. “As far as we are concerned, further discussions will take place in the coming weeks,” the union said, adding that NS had agreed to continue talking.

VVMC said the upcoming talks should clarify whether NS is willing to move far enough over the next month to allow formal negotiations to restart. The company had previously indicated its final offer marked the end of the bargaining process.

NS staff have staged four strikes since negotiations on a new pay deal collapsed.
