Five Legia Warsaw fans jailed for attacking Dutch police

Five Legia Warsaw supporters have been given jail terms by Dutch judges for their role in a violent attack on police following a football match between the Polish club and AZ Alkmaar in 2023.
Each was sentenced to eight months in prison, with four or five months suspended unless they reoffend.
The court said all five played an active role in the violence directed at riot police before the match on 5 October. “They hit and punched the police, even when they were lying on the ground,” the court said. “Some officers are still suffering the effects of the violence to this day.”
The five were also ordered to pay up to €2,000 in damages to a total of 19 police officers they assaulted.
AZ won the match 1-0. Legia was later fined €15,000 by European football body Uefa over the fan-related violence.
Two Legia players were also arrested for assaulting an AZ club official. One was later fined and ordered to pay compensation.
