Dutch crown princess Amalia is to take a second degree in law and will also become a military reservist, she told reporters at the traditional summer photography session in the grounds of Huis ten Bosch palace on Monday evening.

Amalia will combine her second bachelor’s degree with a placement at Defensity College, where university and college students receive basic military training and are officially considered reservists upon completion.

The princess is currently awaiting the mark for her thesis on AI deepfakes and their role in European law, after which she will have completed her degree in politics, psychology, law and economics at the University of Amsterdam.

During the photo session, King Willem-Alexander was asked about last week’s Nato summit in The Hague. “The Netherlands did everything it could to make it a success,” he said. “I am really proud of everyone who made it possible.”

The dinner for world leaders at the family home had “helped” to create a good atmosphere, he said. Amalia, who attended the meal, described meeting all the guests, including US president Donald Trump, as “extremely cool”.

Queen Máxima was asked about a piece of film footage in which she appeared to imitate Trump, and which has been widely shared in the media. “I was thanking someone who had been helping,” she said, repeating the gesture with a smile.

Máxima also said they had been “happily surprised” by how grateful and respectful Trump and his entourage who stayed overnight at the palace, had been.

The twice yearly photo sessions were introduced in 2005 to enable the young princesses to have as normal a life as possible.

In the code, journalists agreed not to take photographs of the royal family outside official engagements. In return, the family agreed to pose for photographs at twice-yearly sessions; once in the summer and once at the start of their skiing holiday.
