Two debutants are among the five Dutch tennis players hoping to make their mark at Wimbledon as this year’s tournament begins on Monday.

Jesper de Jong, who broke into the world’s top 100 in April, will take on the 2.01m (6ft 7ins) American Christopher Eubanks in the first round on Tuesday. Eubanks is currently ranked 130th on the ATP Tour but has been as high as 29th.

In the women’s draw, Suzan Lamens has been drawn against 17-year-old rising star Iva Jovic, also from the USA. Jovic won the Ilkley Open, one of the warm-up tournaments on grass, two weeks ago to reach into the top 100 for the first time.

Lamens, who is ranked 69th and reached the second round of the Australian Open in January, said: “I’m proud to have got this far, but I want to take the next step.” Her first-round match is also on Tuesday.

The top Dutch men’s player, Tallon Griekspoor, arrives in London fresh from winning the grass-court Mallorca Open on Saturday. He also faces an American, Jason Brooksby, who was runner-up in last week’s Eastbourne tournament.

Both men will step onto court on Monday less than 48 hours after their respective finals, with Griekspoor having to contend with 35-degree heat in Spain.

“It was a tough week in terms of temperature, but in terms of matches it wasn’t too bad because they were all two-setters,” he said.

Botic van de Zandschulp takes on the Italian Matteo Arnaldi on Monday afternoon, while Arantxa Rus, a veteran at 34, will face yet another American, Caroline Dolehide, on Tuesday.
