Rail strike set to go ahead on Tuesday after talks stall again

Unions and national train operator NS have not come to a deal on Monday and a planned strike in the north west and east of the country will go ahead on Tuesday, rail unions VVMC and FNV have said.
The strike, the fourth in two weeks’, will centre on the area around Arnhem, Nijmegen, Hengelo, Enschede, Zutphen, Haarlem, Alkmaar and Amsterdam. Services will stop at 4 am, affecting commuter traffic.
The NS is currently assessing the impact of the strike and has not yet said if services to Schiphol airport will be affected. International trains have not been hit by the strikes so far.
Monday’s talks between unions and the company, called in a bid to halt further industrial action, were “disappointing,” FNV negotiator Henri Janssen told broadcaster NOS.
Railway workers are calling for a 6% pay rise and the NS has now offered 3.25% this year and 2.75% next. The unions also want improved early retirement provisions for staff engaged in heavy physical labour.
Two other rail unions, CNV and VHS, do not support Monday’s strike and want to continue talks.
