First-time dads are continuing to get older, latest figures from statistics agency CBS published on Father’s Day have shown.

The 77,000 men who became fathers for the first time in 2024 had an average age of 32.9 compared to 32.5 10 years ago and 31.6 in 1996, when the CBS started its tally.

New dads were an average of 2.5 years older than their partners, and almost two-thirds were in their 30s.

Some 3,500 babies were born last year to fathers under the age of 25, including 350 teenagers, the CBS said. Some 2,500 babies had a father of 50 or older, over a third of whom welcomed their first child.

In May the CBS said the average age at which women in the Netherlands have their first child had risen slightly again, to 30.4 years.

In the early 1970s, the average age for new mothers was 24.3, but it has risen steadily since 2004 and passed 30 in 2021.
