The Dutch government is to spend another €175 million on supporting Ukraine’s defence, including €80 million to purchase extra drones.

Defence minister Ruben Brekelmans announced the aid package on the first day of the Nato summit in The Hague.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address the Dutch parliament later on Tuesday before attending a dinner hosted by king Willem-Alexander at Huis ten Bosch, along with other world leaders including US president Donald Trump.

Brekelmans said the extra support for Ukraine was “crucial” after Russia stepped up its drone attacks on civilian areas in recent weeks. On Monday night 10 people were killed by drones and missiles in Kyiv and another three died in Odesa.

The remaining money will fund better radar systems to detect drones and unmanned vehicles that can transport wounded soldiers from the front line.

The caretaker cabinet has said it will continue to provide aid to Ukraine even though it has been reduced to a rump of three parties after Geert Wilders pulled the far-right PVV out of the four-party coalition three weeks ago.

Caretaker administrations are not supposed to legislate or make decisions on politically sensitive issues, but even without the PVV there is a broad majority in parliament in favour of supporting Ukraine.

Zelenskyy is due to address a gathering of both houses of parliament on Tuesday afternoon, replacing the regular ministers’ question time.

The Ukrainian president last visited the Dutch parliament two years ago on May 4, the day when the Netherlands commemorates its war dead. The previous year he spoke to MPs by video link because of coronavirus restrictions.
