Blokker is back, with 12 new shops and more to come

Household goods retail group Blokker has returned to the high street with 12 of some planned 40 shops opening on Wednesday.

Blokker, which had been loss-making for years, was declared bankrupt in November of last year. The brand rights were bought by Roland Palmer, former CEO and a nephew of Jaap and Ab Blokker.

Palmer said he intends to “revitalise” the chain, which in its heyday numbered almost 400 shops. Apart from the usual household goods, the new shops will also be selling a selection of new products for the home and different brands.

Retail adviser Erik Hemmes said that Blokker could become successful once again if it continues to sell popular products and includes more offers. “You have to make it exciting. A product needs to be special and cheap,” he told the AD.

Blokker could look to Action, Dirk and Nettorama to see how it’s done, he said.

Most former Blokker staff will have found new jobs, however, and finding new staff might be a problem, he said.
