Some 2,000 pig farms need to take action to cut their stench

Some 2,300 pig farms in the Netherlands produce such strong smells that they should be required to take measures to protect locals, according to an analysis by Follow the Money.

Appeal court judges recently ruled that the stench from one pig farm was so severe it conflicted with local residents’ human rights — a decision that sets a precedent and means more farms could now face action, FTM said.

An official report on the implications of the verdict has now been sent to parliament by junior environment minister Chris Jansen. It suggests that 2,300 of the 33,550 pig farms in the Netherlands would have to take action to meet acceptable limits.

Of those, 1,300 cannot solve the problem with technology and will have to reduce the size of their herds, FTM said.

Earlier research by current affairs show Zembla suggests that people exposed to continual stench can suffer from headaches, dizziness and insomnia.
