Riot police break up major fight on Scheveningen seafront

Riot police were called in to break up fighting between rival groups of youngsters in the seaside resort of Scheveningen on Thursday evening.
Between 100 and 300 young people had gathered on the seafront boulevard, seeking confrontation but when police arrived on the scene, they turned against them, pelting them with bottles and stones. It took an intervention by riot police to restore order. No arrests were made.
A local restaurant owner said the rioters had damaged his terrace and that he had lost thousands of euros in revenue.
“I am angry. They spoil everything. Every year, something like this happens in Scheveningen. This is bad for the town’s image,” he told local broadcaster Omroep West.
Scheveningen is part of the municipality of The Hague. Richard de Mos, chairman of local political party Hart van Nederland Richard de Mos has asked for an emergency debate on the riot, saying he wanted a “no-holds-barred clampdown” on the rioters.
