Dutch postal service PostNL is facing competition for domestic deliveries for the first time in years.

Spotta, a company that delivers door-to-door advertising, has applied to the Dutch competition regulator ACM for a licence to deliver addressed mail.

CEO Yme Pastma has said his company plans to invest €20 million in expanding its business to compete with PostNL for advertising mail, but there are no plans to deliver letters or postcards.

He also called on economic affairs minister Dirk Beljaarts to relax the laws on deliveries to make it easier for new operators to enter the market.

PostNL has had a monopoly on the service since it took over its last competitor, Sandd, in 2019. The company also wants the rules to be relaxed so that it is no longer obliged to deliver letters within 24 hours.
