The number of fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars on Dutch roads has topped one million for the first time, according to new figures from national statistics agency CBS.

Fully electric cars account for nearly 600,000 of the total.

In addition, the number of electric and hybrid cars in private hands has also outstripped the number of company cars for the first time, the CBS said.

There were 9.3 million private cars on the roads by April 1, of which 75% are powered by petrol.
