Modi halts visit to Netherlands as Kashmir conflict escalates

India’s prime minister Narendra Modi has postponed his visit to the Netherlands later this month because of the escalating conflict with Pakistan in the Kashmir border region.

Modi had been due to arrive in The Hague next Friday, May 16, and dine with king Willem-Alexander as part of a tour of European countries that also included Norway and Croatia.

Indian media reported this morning that Modi would not be travelling as the prime minister convened all-party talks on the conflict in Kashmir.

KLM announced on Wednesday it would not be flying over Pakistan to avoid the fighting. Flights to destinations including Thailand, Singapore and India will be rerouted.

At least 31 people were killed in missile strikes on nine sites in Pakistan-controlled territory overnight. India said the attacks were aimed at destroying terrorist infrastructure, but Pakistan said one of the buildings hit was a mosque.

Pakistan described the strikes in the Punjab province and Kashmir, which India has called Operation Sindoor, as an “act of war.”

The victims included 10 family members and four close aides of Maulana Masood Azhar, who is classed as a terrorist by the United Nations. Pakistan said it had shot down Indian fighter jets and a drone that were involved in the operation.

India launched the operation after blaming Pakistan for an attack on civilians in Kashmir last month in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed.
