Eindhoven in a party mood as PSV celebrate league win

Tens of thousands of PSV Eindhoven fans turned out in the spring sunshine on Monday to celebrate their club’s league championship, following Sunday’s 1-3 win over Sparta Rotterdam.
It is the 26th time PSV have taken the league title and the second season in a row for Peter Bosz’ squad.
The winning team were picked up at the packed Philips stadium and driven in an open-topped bus through the city, but progress was slow because so many people had turned out to greet them, broadcaster NOS reported.
The main celebration will take place in front of city hall, but there are parties and music all over Eindhoven, NOS said. Singer Guus Meeuwis is among the performers on the city’s main square.
Meanwhile, Eindhoven police say 14 officers were injured during Sunday evening’s celebrations when a group of troublemakers began throwing rocks, glasses, traffic signs and fireworks at police.
In total 22 people were arrested when riot police were drafted in to clear the area close to the PSV stadium.
Four of those arrested remained in custody on Monday and the police have urged people with mobile phone footage of the disturbances to come forward. They have not ruled out further arrests.
Women’s competition
There are also festivities in Enschede on Monday as FC Twente’s women’s team celebrate prolonging their league title. The Twente women finished equal on points with PSV but were ahead on goal differences.
