De Jong stages comeback to book French Open showdown with Zverev

Jesper de Jong booked a second-round meeting against third seed Alexander Zverev in the French Open after fighting back against Francesco Passaro in a five-set thriller.
The 24-year-old from Haarlem was on the brink of going out after losing the second set on a tie-break, but recovered after a bathroom break to win 3-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7,6, 6-1.
De Jong, ranked 88th in the world, said he needed the pit stop to compose himself before mounting his comeback against the Italian, the first time he has turned around a two-set deficit in his career.
“I didn’t really have a choice,” he said. “If I hadn’t stepped off the court and talked to my coaches, it would have gone wrong and then you’re an early break down again.”
De Jong lost in the second round last year to the eventual tournament winner, Carlos Alcaraz, on Court Philippe-Chatrier, and said he hoped to be back on the centre court at Roland-Garros when he takes on Zverev on Thursday.
“I hope it’s going to be on Philippe-Chatrier, because I’ve played there before – obviously he’s played there more often, but I’m looking forward to the match and I’ll give it my best as the underdog.”
Meanwhile, Suzan Lamens lost in straight sets to American Ashlyn Krueger to leave Arantxa Rus as the only Dutch player in the women’s draw.
Rus plays Denmark’s Clara Tauson later on Wednesday in the second round, while the top men’s player, Tallon Griekspoor, will play Gabriel Diallo on Thursday.
